Learn how the Nigerian star balances fun and football.

By   Milcah   Tanimu

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso recently shared the challenge of keeping Nigerian striker Victor Boniface focused on football, despite the player’s fun-loving personality. Boniface, one of Nigeria’s most promising young talents in European football, took the Bundesliga by storm last season. The 23-year-old scored 14 goals and provided nine assists in just 23 league appearances, playing a vital role in helping Bayer Leverkusen secure their first-ever Bundesliga title.

Boniface’s impressive performances earned him the Rookie of the Year award and a spot in the Bundesliga Team of the Season. His contribution to Bayer Leverkusen’s success has made him one of the standout players in German football. This season, Boniface has continued his fine form, scoring two goals and assisting one in Bayer’s commanding 4-1 victory over Hoffenheim.

However, Boniface’s charm isn’t limited to the football pitch. He has gained attention on social media for his comedic personality, often sharing funny memes and participating in online banter. The forward has even appeared in comedy skits and a YouTube roasting challenge, which has increased his popularity among fans and teammates alike.

Xabi Alonso admits that while Boniface’s jovial nature brings positive energy to the team, he must work hard to keep the striker focused on football. “All the teammates really like him; he creates a great atmosphere. Sometimes you have to force him to focus only on football, but that’s my job,” Alonso said.

Boniface’s next challenge will come when Bayer Leverkusen faces Feyenoord in their upcoming Champions League fixture. The Dutch club has made an unbeaten start to the Eredivisie season, while Bayer, fresh from their Bundesliga triumph, will be looking to make their mark on Europe’s biggest stage. This match will be the first competitive meeting between the two teams since their 1987 UEFA Cup encounter.
