NFF Pays Condolence Visit to Family of Late Football Legend Christian Chukwu

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, has paid glowing tribute to late football legend, Christian Chukwu, describing him as a national hero whose legacy will live on.

Gusau’s message was delivered on Friday in Enugu through NFF First Vice President, Felix Anyansi-Agwu, during a condolence visit by a delegation from the NFF and South East Football Association chairmen to the Chukwu family.

He hailed the former Green Eagles captain, fondly known as “Chairman Chukwu,” for his unwavering patriotism and dedication to Nigerian football, both as a celebrated player and as a coach.

“Christian Chukwu gave his best to the country in every role he played. He remains a hero, even in death. His contributions to Nigerian football are unforgettable,” Gusau stated.

He added that the visit was not only to offer condolences but also to show the NFF’s readiness to be actively involved in Chukwu’s burial arrangements, in recognition of his remarkable service to the nation.

“We are here to align with the family’s plans and ensure we honour him appropriately. The NFF will fully support and participate in the burial ceremonies,” he assured.

Responding on behalf of the family, Chukwu’s son, Emeka Chukwu, expressed gratitude to the NFF for the solidarity and confirmed that burial details would be announced soon.

The delegation included NFF Executive Committee member and Chairman of the Nigeria National League, George Aluo; Enugu State FA Chairman, Tony Ugwu; Imo State FA Chairman, Ifeanyi Dike; and Anambra State FA Chairman, Chikelue Iloenyosi.

Christian Chukwu, a former Super Eagles captain and coach, passed away on Saturday, April 12, at the age of 74. He notably captained Nigeria to victory in the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
