Delta State athletes who participated in the Asaba 2022 National Sports Festival have started receiving the long-awaited cash rewards, following the fulfillment of the pledge made by the state government.

A statement by the Director of Public Relations Delta State Sports Commission, Asaba, Mrs. Franka Okonma said the payment, which comes as a major morale booster, was confirmed by the Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr  Onoriode Oborevwori.

The Sports Commission Chairman  described the payment as a demonstration of Governor Oborevwori’s unwavering support for sports development in the state.

He lauded Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for redeeming the outstanding financial commitment and described it as timely and promise fulfilled.

He noted that the gesture reflected the governor’s “MORE Agenda,” which prioritized meaningful development, opportunities for all, and enhanced welfare for the people of Delta State, including athletes.

“This payment is a clear testimony of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s love for sports and his determination to ensure athletes are well cared for.

“Our sports men and women can now attest to the fact that this administration is committed to their welfare and future.”

He further reassured athletes that better days lie ahead under the leadership of Governor Oborevwori, whose plans for sports development include improved facilities, training opportunities, and timely incentives for outstanding performances.

Delta State finished as champions of the Asaba 2022 National Sports Festival, and this gesture reinforces the state’s position as a leading light in Nigerian sports.

The athletes, many of whom had waited patiently for the fulfillment of the promise, have expressed gratitude to the governor for honouring his word and motivating them for future competitions.

They averred to maintain the state’s leading position in Nigeria sports, saying as defending champions of the National Sports Festival they would work assiduously to ensure they retained their title at the forthcoming 2024 National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State billed for next month.
