Victor Osimhen, Napoli-owned forward, is poised to make history in the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. The striker, currently on loan at Galatasaray, is just one goal away from tying Segun Odegbami’s goal-scoring record for the Super Eagles.
Osimhen, who debuted for Nigeria in 2017 with a 3-0 victory over Togo, has scored 22 goals and provided 11 assists in 37 appearances for his country. A single goal against Benin will tie him with Odegbami, the legendary former Shooting Stars player who scored 23 goals in 47 matches for Nigeria between 1976 and 1981. If Osimhen nets a brace, he will surpass Odegbami’s record.
The match, set for 20:00 Nigerian time at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium, holds significant importance for Nigeria’s qualification campaign. Osimhen will be looking to break the record under the guidance of head coach Augustine Eguavoen, continuing his impressive goal-scoring form in AFCON and World Cup qualifiers.
