By Jabiru Hassan, Kano

The newly redeployed Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Works, Engr. Adebiyi Olusesan Olufunso, has assured the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) of his unwavering support in its mission to monitor and maintain federal roads across Nigeria efficiently.

Engr. Olufunso made this statement on Thursday, January 16, 2025, during a briefing and interactive session held at the Federal Ministry of Works Headquarters in Mabushi, Abuja. The session was led by the Managing Director/CEO of FERMA, Engr. Emeka Agbasi, FNSE, alongside the agency’s directors and heads of units.

Collaboration and Commitment

The Permanent Secretary emphasized the importance of close collaboration between FERMA and the Ministry to prevent overlapping responsibilities. He promised to foster a collegial relationship with the FERMA management team, ensuring they feel valued and supported. He also vowed to protect and stand by FERMA staff who operate within public service rules and diligently execute their duties.

Engr. Olufunso highlighted the importance of capacity building through regular retreats and seminars for staff, particularly engineers, to enhance their skills. He stressed the need to digitize public offices to improve operational efficiency and safeguard information.

Road Safety and Security

Addressing road safety concerns, the Permanent Secretary urged FERMA to remain vigilant about troubled spots along highways and work closely with security agencies to ensure the safety of road users and workers.

To tackle the agency’s funding challenges, Engr. Olufunso disclosed ongoing efforts to explore alternative funding sources. He also encouraged FERMA to prioritize direct labor over contractual projects to cover more ground and optimize government resources.

Promoting Achievements

Engr. Olufunso urged FERMA to publicize its activities and achievements widely to raise public awareness and appreciation of the government’s efforts to address road infrastructure challenges.

FERMA’s Presentation

Earlier, the Managing Director/CEO of FERMA, Engr. Emeka Agbasi, FNSE, delivered a comprehensive presentation outlining the agency’s establishment, mandate, structure, operational zones, strategic objectives, achievements, funding profile, and challenges.

The interactive session aimed to strengthen FERMA’s partnership with the Ministry and align efforts toward achieving the agency’s goals.

The event was organized to reaffirm the Federal Ministry of Works’ commitment to enhancing road infrastructure and maintenance across Nigeria.
