Referee under fire for overturning Man Utd penalty against West Brom

Must read

Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand, has criticized referee David Coote for overturning his decision to award West Brom a penalty, as they lost 1-0 to the Red Devils on Saturday.

It was United’s first victory at home in the Premier League this season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men needed a retaken penalty in the second-half to see off the Baggies.

However, with the game still 0-0, the visitors were awarded a penalty for Fernandes’ challenge on Conor Gallagher in the box.

But following advice from VAR, Coote checked his pitch-side monitor and changed his mind.

United then earned a penalty for themselves after Semi Ajayi’s handball. Fernandes’ spot-kick was saved by Sam Johnstone, but it was forced to be retaken with the Baggies goalkeeper clearly off his line.

Fernandes scored his second effort, handing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side all three points at Old Trafford.

“It’s a disgraceful decision, he got it right first time,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport.

“He’s gone there looking at it [the screen]. How do you actually go against the decision that you made initially when you’re looking at it again in slow motion?

“The more you look at it the more it’s a pen.”
