Nigeria’s representatives in this season’s CAF Champions League, Remo Stars and Enugu Rangers, kicked off their campaigns with strong performances, both securing wins in the preliminary round on August 18.

In Ikenne, Remo Stars triumphed 2-1 over Morocco’s AS FAR. Team captain Junior Nduka was instrumental in the victory, scoring the opening goal with a header from a precise free kick by Sodiq Ismail in the 19th minute. Although AS FAR equalized early in the second half, Remo Stars regained the lead with a spectacular flying header from Nduka, assisted once again by Ismail.

In Uyo, NPFL champions Rangers edged past Zilimadjou at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium with a 1-0 win, courtesy of a goal from Uwumiro Frank in the 22nd minute. Despite controlling the match and creating numerous chances, Rangers struggled with their finishing.

Rangers coach Fidelis Ilechukwu noted, “We controlled the game in the first half and could have scored more to secure the match earlier. We eased off in the second half, allowing our opponents to attack, but we managed to hold on for the win.” He added that the team will regroup and prepare thoroughly for the return leg, remaining optimistic about their prospects.

Both Nigerian teams are now gearing up for the second leg of their ties, with Rangers holding a slim lead and Remo Stars facing a challenging return fixture in Morocco.
