Rivers Assembly Backs Emergency Rule, Pledges Support for Sole Administrator

The Rivers State House of Assembly has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Speaker Martin Amaewhule said the Assembly respects the president’s decision, despite it not being their preferred outcome.

“We assure our constituents that we will abide by this declaration, even though it is not what we prayed for. Mr. President has acted in the best interest of the country,” Amaewhule stated.

Governor Fubara Blamed for Crisis

Amaewhule accused Governor Siminalayi Fubara of causing the political turmoil in Rivers State, alleging that he disregarded court judgments and failed to govern according to the constitution.

“The current situation in Rivers State is largely due to the governor’s misconduct. He has repeatedly disobeyed court rulings and obstructed the operations of the Rivers State House of Assembly,” he said.

Assembly Assures Support for Sole Administrator

The Speaker called on Rivers residents to remain calm and cooperate with the Sole Administrator appointed by the president to oversee state affairs.

“We urge everyone to remain calm as the Sole Administrator assumes duty. Rest assured that the Assembly will provide him with all necessary support to restore order,” he added.

Amaewhule also thanked the people of Rivers State for their patience, prayers, and support during this period of emergency.

Tinubu Declares Emergency, Suspends Fubara

On Tuesday, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the state Assembly for six months.

The president stated that the decision was necessary to restore stability in the state, following the prolonged political crisis between the governor and state lawmakers.

As part of the emergency measures, Tinubu appointed former Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Ibokette Ibas, as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State.
