Super Falcons Defeat South Africa, Storm Into WAFCON Final in Pursuit of 10th Title

Nigeria’s Super Falcons are through to the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after edging out long-time rivals Banyana Banyana of South Africa with a 2-1 victory in a pulsating semi-final clash on Tuesday in Casablanca, Morocco.

A stunning late winner by defender Michelle Alozie, struck from distance, sealed the dramatic win for the nine-time champions, keeping alive Nigeria’s dream of clinching a historic 10th WAFCON title.

A Fierce Battle of Equals

The Super Falcons opened scoring in the first half through a penalty converted by captain Rasheedat Ajibade, following a foul inside the box. South Africa responded with a penalty of their own, expertly dispatched by Linda Motlhalo in the second half to level the match.

Both sides played with intensity and tactical discipline. Nigeria nearly broke the deadlock earlier in the first half when striker Chinwendu Ihezuo, chasing the golden boot with three goals, saw her powerful strike pushed over the bar by veteran goalkeeper Andile Dlamini.

The win marked Nigeria’s first victory over South Africa in their last three WAFCON encounters, having previously lost 1-0 and 2-1 to Banyana Banyana in the 2018 and 2022 editions, respectively.

Tinubu Celebrates “Superlative” Victory

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu joined millions of Nigerians in celebrating the Falcons’ victory, hailing the team’s performance as “superlative” and a showcase of the Nigerian fighting spirit.

In a post on his official X handle shortly after the win, Tinubu wrote:

“Congratulations to our Super Falcons! Your incredible #WAFCON2025 semi-finals victory over South Africa today was nothing short of superlative.
It was a magnificent display of grit, talent, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit.”

He commended the team for making the country proud and urged them to remain focused as they head into the final:

“Keep soaring. Don’t stop until you bring the trophy home. Go for our 10th title.”

The President also expressed confidence in their ability to win, adding that Nigerians everywhere are standing solidly behind the team:

“Nigerians worldwide are rooting for you. We are waiting to receive the cup.”

He signed off the message with a personal touch:

“From your President, PBAT.”

Eyes on the Prize

With the win, Nigeria now advances to the WAFCON final, aiming to reclaim the title they last won in 2018 after falling short in 2022. The team remains the most successful side in the history of the competition and will be looking to further cement their legacy with a 10th continental crown.

The Super Falcons’ final match promises to be a thrilling conclusion to what has already been a remarkable campaign for the team and a proud moment for Nigerian football.
