Ter Stegen Undergoes Knee Surgery After Villarreal Injury

By   Milcah   Tanimu

FC Barcelona has confirmed that first-team goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen will undergo knee surgery following an injury sustained in the match against Villarreal. In a statement released Monday, the club noted, “The Barça goalkeeper will undergo a surgical process following the knee injury.”

Tests revealed a complete rupture of the patella tendon in Ter Stegen’s right knee. The surgery is scheduled for Monday afternoon, with further updates expected after the procedure.

The injury occurred in the first half at the Estadio de la Cerámica, where Ter Stegen awkwardly landed after collecting a cross. He was visibly in pain and was quickly replaced by Iñaki Peña.

This season, Ter Stegen has been a key figure for Barça, making his 289th appearance in the match against Villarreal, surpassing legendary goalkeeper Antoni Ramallets to become the third-highest in appearances for the club.

Despite Ter Stegen’s injury, Barcelona triumphed 5-1 against Villarreal, with Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha each scoring twice. Coach Hansi Flick expressed concern over the severity of the injury, stating, “I think it will be a huge injury when he laid down on the field.”
