WCQ 2026: Troost-Ekong Shines as Nigeria Defeat Lesotho 2–1

Nigeria boosted their 2026 World Cup qualification hopes with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Lesotho in Polokwane. After a lacklustre first half, the Super Eagles found their rhythm in the second period, with captain William Troost-Ekong and striker Akor Adams delivering the crucial goals.

Nigeria started brightly, dominating possession and creating early chances through Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman. However, Lesotho’s compact defensive setup frustrated the visitors, and the first half ended goalless despite Nigeria’s control of the game.

The breakthrough came in the 60th minute when Troost-Ekong capitalized on a defensive lapse to give Nigeria the lead. The goal settled the Super Eagles, who began to play with renewed confidence and attacking purpose.

Akor Adams doubled the advantage in the 75th minute, showing composure to slot home after a well-worked move. Lesotho, however, refused to give up, and Hlompho Kalake’s late strike set up a nervy finish. Despite late pressure from the hosts, Nigeria’s defense held firm to secure all three points.

The result puts Nigeria back in strong contention in Group C, keeping them within touching distance of the top spot in the African World Cup qualifying standings.

Man of the Match: William Troost-EkongThe Super Eagles captain led from the front, scoring the opener and marshalling the defense with authority. His leadership, aerial dominance, and calm presence under pressure were instrumental in Nigeria’s victory. Troost-Ekong’s commanding display earned him the Man of the Match award and reaffirmed his importance to the team’s qualification campaign.
