Yobe State Government lifts ban on Motorcycles

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State on Monday lifted a ban on the use of motorcycles in the northern and southern parts of the state.

This is following the return of normalcy in most parts of the areas with the return of civil authorities.

The governor made this known while on a visit to the palace of Emir of Nguru to sympathise with the people over the recent fire incidents that ruined properties worth millions of naira in the Nguru market.

Buni said that the residents are now free to ride motorcycles for their day to day affairs.

“With this, we are fulfilling part of our electioneering campaign to restore peace in the state and to allow the use of motorcycles for the needs of the people,” he said.

The 10 local government areas allowed to use the motorcycles are Fika, Nangere, Fune, Potiskum, Jakusko, Bade, Nguru, Karasuwa, Yusufari and Machina.

However, the measure was based on eight conditions that must be met by the riders, one of which is that they must operate between 6 am to 6 pm every day and should not be used for kabu-kabu (Achaba) commercials. Only one rider will be allowed without any other person on the bike.

He said also there must be proper registration, license and documentation of all motorcycles and cyclists in effected LGAs by the Yobe State Road Traffic Management Agency (YOROTA) respectively.

It could be recalled that the Yobe State Government banned the use of motorcycles at the height of the Boko Haram insurgency in the last 12 years.
