Fire Outbreaks: FCTA cautions filling stations on guidelines, discharge regulations adherence

By Joyce Remi-Babayeju

Owing to incessant fire outbreaks in filling stations in the Territory, the Federal Capital Territory Administration has cautioned petrol station owners to always adhere to guidelines and regulations of discharging fuel in the territory to avoid future occurrences.

The Acting Director, FCT Fire Service, Engr. Sani Saidu, gave this caution today during a meeting with owners of Filling Stations, managers, supervisors of oil & gas stations in the territory.

He complained that the rate of explosion of fuel tankers in Abuja was becoming worrisome and must be addressed.

Saidu, said that the meeting was necessary following recent Fire incidents at filling stations.

He warned that all dealers and stakeholders in the city must henceforth adhere to the guidelines issued to them by the Fire Service for the safety of people and property.

Speaking on the reason for incessant fire outbreaks in petrol stations, Saidu said that petrol dealers ought to be careful during dry weather, which is a vulnerable season which demands caution.

He said that the administration would not tolerate activities that would cause fire outbreak, especially during dry season.

The Director advised fuel station owners and other relevant stakeholders to always liaise with the service to prevent fire disaster across the city.

“There are some accidents that can’t be avoided but as there are others caused by our careless way of doing things, I don’t care attitude would not help us.”

“When there is fire outbreak as a result of discharging of fuel, both the station owner and the residents suffer, including the government and Fire Service men.”

Owners of filling station, oil, and gas dealers must be awake to their responsibility of heeding to discharge regulations. FCT Fire Service will not accept careless activities that would result in fire outbreaks, Saidu said.
