Newcastle United vs. Paris Saint-Germain (PSG): UEFA Champions League Preview and Injury Update

By  Milcah  Tanimu

In a highly anticipated UEFA Champions League clash, Newcastle United is set to take on Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at St. James Park on Wednesday. This match marks Newcastle’s return to the Champions League since their 2-0 loss to Barcelona in March 2003.

Eddie Howe’s side began their European campaign with a promising 0-0 draw against AC Milan away from home. However, they understand the importance of winning their home matches to secure their chances of advancing from what’s considered the challenging “Group of Death.”

The matchup promises to be an exciting one as PSG, led by Kylian Mbappe and under the management of Luis Enrique, will be visiting St. James Park. PSG has been undergoing a transition phase, moving away from superstar names like Lionel Messi and Neymar. This new approach will face a significant test against Newcastle.

Notably, Newcastle’s goalkeeper, Nick Pope, achieved a milestone by keeping a clean sheet in his first UEFA Champions League start. He became the fifth English goalkeeper to achieve this feat and the first since Fraser Forster in 2012. No English keeper has ever kept a clean sheet in their first two starts in the competition.

PSG, with several high-profile departures this summer, including Messi, Neymar, Sergio Ramos, and Marco Verratti, has brought in a mix of younger talents and experienced stars. The team’s captain, Kylian Mbappe, will be a key player to watch, having scored UEFA Champions League goals against top English clubs in various venues.

In terms of injuries, Newcastle faces challenges with Joelinton and Callum Wilson unlikely to feature due to hamstring issues, while Sven Botman will also be absent. Joe Willock remains sidelined after not playing all season. On the other hand, Sandro Tonali is available.

For PSG, Mbappe is expected to start despite a recent ankle knock. Nuno Mendes is unavailable, and Marco Asensio and Presnel Kimpembe are also sidelined.
