PIDOM: Nigerians Accuse FG of Arresting Whistleblower

By   Milcah   Tanimu

Nigerians have expressed outrage on social media over the alleged arrest of an anonymous whistleblower known as PIDOM. The individual, who operates under the username @PIDOMNigeria, is recognized for exposing corruption through leaked documents involving the federal government, security agencies, state governments, and private firms.

According to investigative journalist David Hundeyin, PIDOM was reportedly arrested on August 5 in Port Harcourt and subsequently transferred to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja. He is reportedly under the scrutiny of the National Cybercrime Centre (NCCC).

Hundeyin’s report, titled “SOS Alert: PIDOM NIGERIA Is Missing (And I Think We May Know Who Has Him),” claims that PIDOM’s crypto wallet information might have been used by the government to link him to certain suspects. Hundeyin raises concerns about potential torture or worse, suggesting that PIDOM might be facing serious danger.

The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, has mentioned that some individuals linked to the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria movement were arrested and their crypto assets frozen. Hundeyin speculates that PIDOM’s details may have been accessed from Binance, leading to his detention.

As of now, no official response has been provided by any security agency or federal government official regarding PIDOM’s status. Public outcry has been significant, with many Nigerians criticizing the government for prioritizing the arrest of a whistleblower over addressing pressing issues such as banditry and other security challenges.

Users on social media have voiced their frustrations:

– **NaijaPatriot @jollynony** criticized the government for appearing more adept at suppressing voices seeking accountability than tackling violent crime.
– **Emma ik Umeh (Tcee) @emmaikumeh** lamented that security forces are focusing on activists while failing to resolve more urgent matters like recent kidnappings.
– **DOS COMMENTARY @DosCommentary** highlighted the troubling trend of targeting activists while criminals remain at large.
– **Chude Nnamdi @chude__** pointed out the irony of tracking PIDOM but not apprehending high-profile fugitives like former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello.
– **ỌjịUgo @OjiUgo_nwa** expressed frustration over the inability of security forces to track and rescue kidnapped individuals while efficiently targeting critics.

The situation underscores the ongoing tension between governmental actions and public expectations concerning transparency and justice in Nigeria.
