1,700 Army Personnel Benefit from Empowerment Loan Scheme

By Ogenyi Ogenyi, Uyo

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has announced that 1,700 Army personnel have benefited from the ongoing Empowerment Loan Scheme. This scheme, which was launched earlier this year, aims to support Army members by providing financial assistance at lower interest rates compared to traditional banks.

Speaking at the combined second and third quarters Chief of Army Staff Conference 2024 in Uyo on Tuesday, Gen. Lagbaja highlighted the success of the scheme, noting that there is currently a waiting list of approximately 3,000 personnel. He emphasized that the initiative is designed to shield soldiers from high interest rates and improve their overall welfare.

The COAS also discussed the Army’s efforts to combat militancy, pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft, and illegal oil refining in the Niger Delta. He praised the Nigerian Army’s operations, stating that these efforts have significantly impacted terrorist and criminal groups.

“Our operations have consistently targeted the strongholds of these adversaries,” Lagbaja said. He also commended the Nigerian Army and other security agencies working under the Joint Task Force (South-South) Operation DELTA SAFE for their enhanced efforts to boost Nigeria’s crude oil production.

Additionally, the Army has acquired new combat enablers, including Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles, rifles, and ammunition, to bolster their operations. Gen. Lagbaja expressed confidence that these acquisitions would improve the effectiveness of the troops and contribute to a more secure environment conducive to economic growth.

The COAS acknowledged the support of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom for their contributions to the Army’s efforts. He urged continued collaboration and assistance from well-meaning Nigerians to support the troops.

Governor Umo Eno reaffirmed his commitment to assisting the Nigerian Army, highlighting that his development agenda, the ARISE Agenda, prioritizes security. Eno outlined various measures taken by his administration, including the creation of a Ministry of Internal Security and Waterways, the establishment of the Ibom Community Watch (ICW), and the deployment of 14 patrol boats to address maritime threats.

He commended the Army for its efforts in tackling security challenges and appreciated the Chief of Army Staff for holding the conference in Akwa Ibom. Governor Eno also praised the establishment of the Headquarters of the 2 Brigade in the state, which he believes will enhance local security operations.
