NiMet Predicts Heavy Rains and Thunderstorms Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted thunderstorms and heavy rains across various parts of the country from Wednesday through Friday.

In its weather outlook released on Tuesday in Abuja, NiMet predicted thunderstorms in the northern region during the morning hours of Wednesday, affecting parts of Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Katsina, Sokoto, and Kaduna States.

By afternoon and evening, similar weather conditions are expected to impact Kano, Borno, Katsina, Adamawa, Kaduna, Taraba, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Jigawa States.

For the North Central region, thunderstorms are predicted over areas such as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, and Niger States in the morning, with thunderstorms expected to continue later in the day in the FCT, Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, Niger, and Kwara States.

In the southern part of the country, NiMet forecasts thunderstorms over areas like Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Delta, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States in the morning. Intermittent rains are expected later in the day across parts of Enugu, Ebonyi, Abia, Anambra, Edo, Ekiti, Oyo, Rivers, Cross River, Delta, and Akwa Ibom States.

On Thursday, NiMet anticipates thunderstorms in Taraba and Adamawa States in the northern region in the morning, with the weather extending to Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba States in the afternoon and evening.

In North Central, rains are expected over parts of Plateau and Benue States in the morning, with thunderstorms continuing later in the day across the FCT, Nasarawa, Kogi, Niger, Kwara, and Benue States.

The southern region will likely experience intermittent rains in Enugu and Anambra States in the morning, followed by widespread rains in Ondo, Edo, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Abia, Cross River, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Delta States later in the day.

On Friday, thunderstorms are expected in the northern region, particularly in Adamawa and Taraba States in the morning, spreading to Taraba, Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, and Zamfara States later in the day. The North Central region will experience morning rains in Nasarawa and Niger States, with localized thunderstorms later in Kogi, FCT, Kwara, and Niger.

In southern cities, cloudy skies are expected in the morning, followed by thunderstorms and intermittent rains in the inland and coastal areas.

NiMet advised residents in flood-prone areas to take precautions as heavy downpours may lead to urban flooding. The agency also warned of strong winds accompanying thunderstorms, urging the public to follow safety advisories from relevant authorities.

Airline operators were also advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective flight planning. The public is encouraged to stay informed by checking weather updates on NiMet’s website, www.nimet.gov.ng.
