Governor Zulum Assesses Flood Damage to Roads and Bridges in Maiduguri

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, conducted an assessment on Thursday of vital infrastructure in Maiduguri, including roads, bridges, and hospitals, damaged by the catastrophic flood disaster that struck the metropolis and surrounding local government areas.

The flood, which occurred on September 10, has been described as the worst in Maiduguri in over three decades, resulting in significant damage, isolating communities, and hindering the movement of essential goods.

Governor Zulum visited key locations, including Gwange maternity, road networks, and Fori, Moro-Moro, and Gwange bridges, according to a release by the Governor’s SSA on new media, Abdurrahman Bundi.

During his assessment, Zulum expressed concern over the destruction caused by the flooding and highlighted the impact of houses built on riverbanks, which obstructed the passage of water from the Ngada River. He stated, “The quantum of the destruction is enormous. You can see we just visited one place. It is very unfortunate that some people choose to build houses right inside the waterways, obstructing the water passage. Otherwise, the water could have flowed onto the lowland without affecting the main city.”

The governor’s visit underscores the urgent need for infrastructure restoration and improved urban planning to prevent similar disasters in the future.
