Victor Collins Earns National Team Call-Up Ahead of AFCON Qualifiers as Teenage Sensation Shina Kumater Jr. Gets CHAN Eagles’ Invitation

By Leo Zwànke, Lafia

Nasarawa United FC’s central defender, Victor Collins, has earned a call-up to Nigeria’s Senior Men’s National Football Team, the Super Eagles, ahead of their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers. Collins will join the squad for the crucial fixtures against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

The 23-man squad, selected by Coach Augustine Eguavoen, includes Collins as the only home-based player. This milestone marks a significant achievement for both Collins and Nasarawa United, as the club has closely followed his career with immense pride.

The Super Eagles will take on Benin Republic away on Thursday, November 14, 2024, and will host Rwanda on Monday, November 18, 2024. Collins’ inclusion in the national team is seen as a testament to his stellar performances in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), where he has consistently impressed with his defensive strength, tactical awareness, and leadership qualities.

“Victor’s defensive abilities and leadership have been key to our success this season,” said Nasarawa United Chairman Solomon Babanjah. “We are proud to see him represent Nigeria on the international stage. This is a huge step forward for both his career and our club.”

Previously, Collins was invited to Team B of the Super Eagles for the Championship of African Nations (CHAN) Qualifiers, where he made a lasting impression. His solid performances during the training camps ahead of those qualifiers earned him his current place in the senior team.

In a further boost for Nasarawa United, 17-year-old attacking midfielder Shina Kumater Jr. has also received his first call-up to join Team B of the Super Eagles. Shina, who has been a standout player in his debut season with Nasarawa United, has quickly gained recognition for his technical skills and maturity on the field.

“Shina has displayed remarkable potential, and his call-up is well-deserved,” said Coach Daniel Saliu of Nasarawa United. “His versatility and vision make him a key asset, and we’re excited to see him represent Nigeria.”

The club’s success has been supported by the Nasarawa State Government, with Governor Abdullahi Sule’s unwavering backing playing a pivotal role in their progress. “The governor’s support has been instrumental in our achievements,” Babanjah noted. “It motivates us to reach new heights and continuously strive for excellence.”

Currently, Nigeria leads Group D in the AFCON qualifiers with 10 points from four matches, alongside Libya, as the country looks ahead to the AFCON tournament in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
