IG Vows Strong Action Against Attacks on Police Officers

By Abigail Philip David

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a strong warning against assaults on police officers, asserting that such actions will be met with decisive and appropriate responses.

During his visit to the Enugu State Police Command on Friday, Egbetokun described attacks on police personnel as both criminal and an affront to the institution. He emphasized that in 2025, the Nigeria Police Force would adopt a zero-tolerance approach to such incidents.

“We will not tolerate any assault on our police officers, let alone killing them,” he stated. “An assault on a policeman is an assault on the Inspector General and the entire institution. We will respond collectively and appropriately to any such actions to ensure justice is served.”

Egbetokun urged officers to remain vigilant and resolute, warning that any attack on police personnel would attract swift consequences.

Commitment to Welfare and Professionalism

The IG also acknowledged ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of police personnel in collaboration with the federal government. He assured officers that the sacrifices they make are recognized, with welfare programs in the pipeline to enhance their working conditions.

“There are welfare initiatives being developed with the Federal Government that will soon unfold,” he said. “These programs will address key concerns and improve the well-being of officers. Disregard misinformation from mischief-makers claiming otherwise.”

Commendation for Enugu Command

Egbetokun commended the professionalism and dedication of the Enugu State Police Command, highlighting their achievements in combating crime. However, he expressed concern over a few “bad eggs” tarnishing the force’s image, promising to address these issues internally.

“I’ve met with the governor, who praised the commitment and professionalism of this command,” he said. “While most officers are diligent, we must address the actions of those undermining the force’s reputation.”

Focus on 2025 Policing Vision

Egbetokun outlined his vision for the police force in 2025, emphasizing professionalism, ethical conduct, training, and the provision of modern policing tools. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting officers in maintaining law and order across the country.

“This year, we will vigorously pursue our policing vision for Nigeria,” he stated. “We aim to stamp out criminality, prevent its resurgence, and equip officers to carry out their duties effectively.”

Egbetokun also dismissed rumors circulating on social media, describing them as attempts to discredit the police. He urged officers to remain focused and not be swayed by detractors.

“No IG will neglect the welfare of his officers,” he said. “Ignore the handiwork of mischief-makers spreading falsehoods about the force.”

The IG’s visit and strong stance underscore the police force’s determination to protect its personnel and enforce professionalism while addressing internal challenges.
