Reps Pass N1.78 Trillion FCT 2025 Budget for Second Reading

The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed the N1.78 trillion 2025 Appropriation Bill for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) through second reading.

The budget breakdown reveals that N150.35 billion is allocated for personnel costs, N343.77 billion for overhead expenses, and N1.28 trillion dedicated to capital projects.

The bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Authorise the Issue from the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s Statutory Revenue Fund of the Federal Capital Territory Administration Account, the Total Sum of N1,783,823,708,392.00…” was presented by the House Leader, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, during plenary.

The motion for second reading was seconded by Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, after which the bill was referred to the House Committees on Federal Capital Territory and FCT Area Councils/Ancillary Matters for further scrutiny.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier transmitted the proposed budget to the National Assembly, in line with Section 299 of the 1999 Constitution, which grants the National Assembly legislative authority over the FCT.

In a letter read by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen on May 6, 2025, President Tinubu emphasized that the 2025 FCT budget targets key areas such as healthcare, job creation, social welfare, agriculture, and infrastructure development.

He further noted that 85% of the capital expenditure is allocated to completing existing projects, while the remaining 15% will fund new initiatives.
