Sokoto Government Provides 20 Outboard Machines To Riverine Communities

By Muhammad Ibrahim, Sokoto

The Sokoto State Government has provided 20 outboard machines to six riverine communities in a bid to curb frequent boat mishaps in the state.

Deputy Governor Alhaji Idris Mohammed Gobir announced the gesture during a condolence visit to Goronyo Local Government Area, where a boat accident recently left over 40 passengers missing. The machines will be distributed to Goronyo, Isa, Sabon Birni, Wamakko, Shagari, and Kware local government areas.

Gobir, who led a high-powered delegation on behalf of Governor Ahmed Aliyu, explained that the measure aims to enhance safety on waterways. He also assured that the state government remains committed to completing the ongoing Kojiyo road and bridge project to ease movement and reduce risks associated with water transport.

During the visit, the deputy governor announced a donation of ₦20 million and 100 bags of grains to support victims and their families. He prayed for the recovery of the missing persons and strength for the bereaved families.

Council Chairman, Engineer Zubairu Yari Goronyo, told the delegation that the accident occurred on Saturday around 1:30 p.m. when a wooden boat carrying 50 passengers and nine motorcycles capsized due to overloading and strong winds. Only four people and six motorcycles were rescued at the time of the visit, with divers still searching for survivors.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed that 26 passengers have been rescued while 25 remain missing. Local divers, fishermen, and water guards from Silame and Argungu have been mobilised to assist in the recovery efforts.

Sokoto NEMA Operations Officer, Shehu Aliyu Kafin-Daji, said officials of the agency promptly moved to the scene on the day of the incident and continue to coordinate rescue operations.
