Grammy Award-winning singer Burna Boy has revealed why he arrived at the Benikrukru Christmas Carnival wearing a face-covering mask reminiscent of legendary musician Lagbaja.
The free community festival, organised by the Esther Matthew Tonlagha Foundation, brought together thousands of attendees in the Niger Delta and featured performances by top artistes including Phyno, Shallipopi, and Timaya, alongside colourful parades and festive activities.
Photos and videos circulating online showed Burna Boy at the carnival wearing the disguise, sparking curiosity among fans. Explaining his decision, the singer said he wanted his stage appearance to be unexpected.
“I said make I disguise myself so that when I explode on stage, e go catch everybody by surprise,” Burna Boy said.
The appearance comes amid a period of heightened public attention on the artiste. As previously reported, Burna Boy faced heavy criticism after an incident in which he chased a fan out of his show for allegedly sleeping during his performance. The action sparked backlash, with some fans reportedly boycotting his concerts in response.
The singer later issued an apology, expressing regret over the incident and appealing to fans for forgiveness.
