Delta State Receives Torch of Unity Ahead of 2nd Niger Delta Games

Delta State has formally received the Torch of Unity for the 2nd Niger Delta Games, reinforcing the state’s commitment to youth empowerment, regional integration, and sports development.The ceremony took place on Monday at Government House, Asaba, with Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme representing Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori. Onyeme described the torch as a symbol of peace, unity, and the shared vision of Niger Delta states to use sports as a tool for sustainable development.“

The torch represents more than a ceremonial emblem; it embodies peace, unity, and our collective goal to harness sports as a catalyst for youth engagement and regional progress,” Onyeme said. He emphasized the role of sports in fostering discipline, teamwork, and excellence among young people while steering them away from social vices.

Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr. Onoriode Oborevwori, explained that the state had conducted thorough local and state trials to ensure its best athletes compete in all 16 sporting events at the festival. He noted that the Games strengthen ties among neighboring states and promote peaceful coexistence.

Project Consultant and Managing Director of Dunamis Icon Limited, Hon. Itiako Ikpokpo, highlighted that the festival is designed to identify and nurture talent, with over 4,000 athletes expected to participate. He said the focus is on discovering future champions rather than just winning medals.The 2nd Niger Delta Games will take place in Benin City, Edo State, from February 20 to 27, 2026. Delta State has pledged full support for the successful hosting of the event.
