Bayelsa State has received the Unity Torch for the 2nd Niger Delta Games, signaling regional solidarity ahead of the multi-sport event in Benin City, Edo State.The torch arrived in Yenagoa on Monday, February 16, 2026, as part of its tour across the nine Niger Delta states.
The initiative is sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and organized in collaboration with Dunamis Icon Limited.The handover ceremony at Samson Siasia Complex highlighted the torch as a symbol of unity, peace, and shared sporting ambition among participating states.
Governor Douye Diri’s representative, Commissioner for Sports Development Champion Daniel Igali, praised the NDDC and event organizers for promoting regional sports. He reaffirmed Bayelsa’s commitment to strong participation, building on its dominant performance in the inaugural edition.
Loveday Herbert, Secretary of the Bayelsa State Liaison Committee, speaking for Dunamis Icon Limited, emphasized that the torch represents unity among Niger Delta states. He also commended Bayelsa for its warm reception and assured that world-class facilities and organisation are in place for the Games.
The event drew state sports officials, including Director of the Bayelsa State Sports Council Andrew Aye, Technical Adviser on Sports Alaowei Opukeme, Dr. Kola Oredipe, coaches, athletes, and other stakeholders.The 2nd Niger Delta Games will officially open on Friday, February 20, 2026, in Benin City, with the closing ceremony scheduled for Thursday, February 26.
