Nigeria Football Federation Awaits FIFA Verdict Over DR Congo Eligibility Case

Nigerian football is on edge as FIFA prepares to announce its decision on a petition filed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) against the Fédération Congolaise de Football Association.

What Sparked the Dispute?

The case stems from Nigeria’s dramatic 4–3 penalty shoot-out defeat to the DR Congo national football team in Morocco last November during the African play-off final for the 2026 World Cup.

Following the loss, the NFF lodged a formal complaint on 15 December 2025, alleging that six Congolese players who had recently switched international allegiance were ineligible to feature in that decisive fixture.

If FIFA rules in Nigeria’s favour, the Nigeria national football team could be reinstated into the six-nation Intercontinental Play-off scheduled for next month — effectively reviving their 2026 World Cup hopes.

Confidence from Nigerian Officials

NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi has publicly expressed optimism about the case, insisting that the federation believes it has presented strong evidence.

Similarly, National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko has voiced confidence that Nigeria will receive a favourable outcome.

Allegations of Lobbying

Reports also suggest that DR Congo are confident of their standing. Attention has been drawn to Véron Mosengo-Omba, Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football, who is Congolese.

According to media claims, football officials from Congo and other Francophone countries are allegedly lobbying within FIFA circles to secure a favourable ruling. No official confirmation has been provided regarding such claims.

AFCON Focus Amid Uncertainty

While awaiting FIFA’s verdict, Nigeria are also preparing for a crucial Group C clash against Tunisia at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Both teams won their opening matches, making tonight’s encounter pivotal in determining control of the group.

For now, all eyes remain on FIFA’s decision — one that could either confirm Nigeria’s elimination or dramatically reopen their path to the 2026 World Cup.
