Army Major, 10 Suspected ISWAP Fighters Killed as Troops Repel Attacks on Borno Bases

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have repelled coordinated attacks by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters on three military bases in Borno State, killing 10 attackers, the military said.

In a statement, the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force (North East), Lt. Col. Sani Uba, said the assaults targeted Forward Operating Bases in Mayanti, Gajigana and Gajiram between February 28 and March 1, 2026.

According to the statement, five suspected fighters were killed in Mayanti, three in Gajiram and two during the Gajigana attack. Troops retained control of all locations.

The military said the attack on Mayanti involved “a large number of terrorists,” but was repelled after reinforcements fought through ambushes and improvised explosive devices. An Army major was killed during the encounter.

Items recovered across the operations included PKT automatic weapons, RPG launchers, AK-47 and FN rifles, ammunition and an armed drone, the statement said.

At about 1:15 a.m. on March 1, troops in Gajiram were also attacked with heavy weapons and drones but repelled the assault with air support. One wounded soldier was evacuated for treatment.

In separate operations in Sector 2, troops engaged suspected fighters in Kayawa Village and parts of Gujba Local Government Area, recovering weapons and arresting two suspected logistics suppliers.

The military said all affected bases remain under its control.
