The campaign team of a frontline governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, has faulted recent political developments in Nasarawa State, describing them as unconstitutional and a threat to internal party democracy.
Speaking on Tuesday during a press briefing at the NUJ Secretariat on behalf of the team, the Director General of the Mohammed Abubakar Adamu 2027 Gubernatorial Movement, Hon. Barr. Musa Hussein, criticized the alleged endorsement and adoption of a “preferred” aspirant by Governor Abdullahi Sule ahead of the 2027 elections.
“This address is necessitated by recent developments within the APC in Nasarawa State, particularly the purported endorsement, vote of confidence, and the so-called adoption of a preferred governorship aspirant,”
Hussein said. “After careful review, these actions are unconstitutional, misleading, and a direct threat to internal party democracy.”
He stressed that the position being expressed reflects that of the Adamu campaign, insisting that the APC constitution only recognizes direct primaries or consensus as legitimate modes for candidate emergence.
“There is no provision for unilateral adoption or imposition of any aspirant by individuals or party structures. A governorship primary is a democratic contest, not a coronation,” he stated.
The campaign team further alleged that some ward executives and party officials were pressured to support a particular aspirant, raising concerns about the credibility of the process.
“Reports indicate that several ward executives and officials were subjected to undue pressure. Any outcome derived under such conditions cannot be regarded as democratic or valid,” he added.
Hussein also dismissed claims of any national endorsement, warning party members against being misled.
“It is important to clarify that no national endorsement has been granted for any governorship aspirant in Nasarawa State. Any attempt to associate such claims with higher authority is misleading and should be disregarded,” he said.
The Adamu campaign team raised concerns over alleged intimidation of public office holders, including local government officials and councillors.
“This is unacceptable. Public officials are representatives of the people, not instruments of political coercion,” Hussein stated.
Maintaining that no primary election has been conducted, the team said all aspirants remain equal stakeholders and cautioned party officials against taking sides.
“Party officials at all levels must remain neutral. Any involvement in premature endorsement or partisan alignment before the primaries constitutes misconduct and will be resisted,” he warned.
The campaign team called on the national leadership of the APC to intervene and uphold due process.
“A call is hereby made to the national leadership of our great party to urgently review these developments, nullify any unconstitutional declarations, and reaffirm adherence to due process,” he said.
Reaffirming confidence in the process, Hussein noted that the direct primary election scheduled for May 21, 2026, remains the only legitimate path to producing the party’s candidate.
“This process must be transparent and free from interference. The constitution of the party must prevail. The primaries will hold, and the people will decide,” he declared.
He also urged the people of Nasarawa State to defend their democratic rights.
“We urge the people not to surrender their voice. Democracy depends on your freedom to choose without fear or intimidation,” he said.
