Senate President Godswill Akpabio has denied reports that the Department of State Services (DSS) has taken control of the National Assembly to thwart an alleged impeachment plot against him.
During a Senate session on Wednesday, Akpabio labeled the claims as “fake news.” He humorously suggested that the rumor-mongers might be driven by the desire for increased website traffic and potential ad revenue.
“[They said DSS] has surrounded the National Assembly to possibly stop the impeachment of principal officers,” he stated. “There is no limit to social media… we are sitting here doing our work peacefully, oblivious of the mischief.”
Akpabio then inquired about the appropriate committee to handle the situation. He noted that some individuals might be financially incentivized to spread such rumors. “I hope the public is aware that this is total fake news,” he added.
Following his remarks, Akpabio referred the issue to the Special Duties Committee, requesting a report back “as soon as possible.”
