Former Super Falcons star Maureen Mmadu is seeking justice after alleged police brutality and defamation. The incident involved her and players from her Maureen Mmadu Kiddies Academy in Anambra State on October 9, 2024.
Officers from the Anti-Cult Unit reportedly stormed her academy without a warrant. They allegedly assaulted players, destroyed property, and arrested Mmadu. A parent, Uchenna Onyekwunife, accused her of armed gangsterism, child trafficking, and threats to life.
“They handcuffed me, accusing me of being a kidnapper and cultist,” Mmadu stated. “My players were injured and hospitalised. The police promised to pay medical bills and repair destroyed items but have done nothing.”
To seek redress, Mmadu staged a peaceful protest at the Anambra State Police Command headquarters in Awka. She was joined by students and parents. However, her complaints have faced delays, with police redirecting her between the headquarters and Zone 13 in Dunukofia.
On Tuesday, the Commissioner of Police, Obono Itam, dismissed her group and ordered them to disperse.
Mmadu, a veteran of four FIFA Women’s World Cups, demands justice. She seeks the return of confiscated items and an investigation into the accusations. She also wants accountability for her injured players.
“This back-and-forth must stop,” she insisted.
The former Super Falcons midfielder was part of the squad that won the Women Africa Cup of Nations in 2000.
