Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has reportedly died in a car accident in Spain, according to local media reports. The 28-year-old Portuguese international was said to have been involved in the fatal crash near Zamora in northwestern Spain early Thursday morning.
Spanish news agency EFE reported that the accident occurred on the Rías Bajas Highway (A-52) near Palacios de Sanabria. Jota’s younger brother, André Jota, 26, was also killed in the incident.
According to El Mundo, the crash happened at about 12:40 a.m. local time when their vehicle veered off the road and caught fire while heading toward Benavente.
The tragedy comes just 10 days after Jota celebrated his wedding, having recently shared images from the ceremony on social media.
Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 2020 in a deal exceeding £40 million, had become a key figure for the Reds, admired for his versatility and goal-scoring ability. His brother André played for Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.
