Lookman Shines in Atalanta’s UCL Defeat to Madrid, Wins MOTM Award

By Abigail Philip

Ademola Lookman delivered another stellar performance, earning the UEFA Champions League Man of the Match award despite Atalanta’s narrow 2-3 loss to Real Madrid at the Gewiss Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Nigerian winger showcased his brilliance with a stunning goal, further cementing his reputation as one of football’s rising stars. His form has been a beacon of consistency, earning him recognition on both club and international stages.

Speaking to CBS Sports Golazo analyst and former England international Micah Richards after the match, Lookman attributed his impressive form to regular game time.

“Just timing, really. Over these past two and a half years, I’ve had consistency in playing, which has helped me improve and showcase my qualities,” Lookman said. He added, “It also comes with circumstances, so I’ll take it as it comes and continue to improve.”

Lookman’s goal, a result of a sharp interplay with Charles De Ketelaere, highlighted his creativity and instinctive play. Although Real Madrid clinched victory through goals from Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, and Jude Bellingham, Lookman’s performance stole the spotlight, reaffirming his status as one of the game’s most exciting talents.

A Stellar Year for Lookman
Lookman’s rise has been nothing short of remarkable. He was recently nominated for the CAF African Player of the Year award, cementing his place among Africa’s elite footballers.

In the 2023 Ballon d’Or standings, Lookman ranked 14th, making him one of the highest-ranked African players in the prestigious awards. His contributions last season were pivotal in Atalanta’s historic Europa League triumph, where he scored a hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen, leading the Italian side to a 3-0 victory and their first-ever European trophy.

On the international stage, Lookman played a vital role in Nigeria’s journey to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final. The Super Eagles finished as runners-up, narrowly losing to host nation Côte d’Ivoire.

Future Prospects
Lookman’s consistency and brilliance have made him a sought-after player. However, Atalanta’s club president has declared him “not for sale,” aiming to fend off interest from top European clubs ahead of the January transfer window.

With his CAF nomination, Ballon d’Or recognition, Europa League title, and AFCON experience, Ademola Lookman continues to write an inspiring story of resilience and excellence, shining on every stage he graces.
