Mikel Obi Praises Lookman and Saka’s International Career Choices

By  Milcah   Tanimu

Former Super Eagles and Chelsea midfielder, John Mikel Obi, has lauded the international career decisions made by Ademola Lookman and Bukayo Saka. According to Mikel, both players wisely chose paths that have significantly boosted their football careers.

Ademola Lookman, who represented England at youth levels alongside players like Dominic Solanke and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, switched his international allegiance to Nigeria in 2022. On the other hand, Bukayo Saka, also born to Nigerian parents, opted to continue his rise with England’s national team, the Three Lions.

Mikel, during punditry on BeIN Sports, shared his thoughts on players who wait too long to represent their African roots. He has been outspoken about athletes who only turn to their heritage countries when their careers start to decline, a move he strongly criticizes. However, in the case of Lookman and Saka, Mikel praised their timely decisions.

“I believe players shouldn’t wait until they’re older to honor their African roots,” Mikel said. “Both Lookman and Saka made the right choices early in their careers. Saka has become a key player for England, and Lookman has proven himself as an asset to the Super Eagles. They both took paths that suit their aspirations, and it’s paid off.”

Lookman is a strong contender for the CAF Player of the Year Award, thanks to his brilliant performances last season with Atalanta. Meanwhile, Saka continues to shine for England, helping lead the team to the final of EURO 2024.
