“Nigeria’s Super Eagles Slip to 40th in Latest FIFA Rankings”

By  Milcah  Tanimu

Despite an emphatic victory in their recent match during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, Nigeria has slipped one place in the latest FIFA men’s rankings for June, as reported

In the previous FIFA rankings released in June, Nigeria’s national team, the Super Eagles, held the 39th position. However, they experienced a minor setback, losing three points and dropping to 40th place in the most recent rankings.

The Super Eagles showcased their dominance in their last AFCON qualifiers match, defeating Sao Tome and Principe with an impressive 6-0 scoreline. Despite this convincing victory, it did not translate into an improved FIFA ranking for the team.

Under the leadership of coach Jose Peseiro, Nigeria’s national team secured the top spot in Group A of the AFCON qualifiers, accumulating a noteworthy total of 15 points. This achievement guaranteed their participation in the upcoming AFCON tournament scheduled to be held in Ivory Coast next year.

The FIFA rankings are a dynamic reflection of national teams’ performances over time, taking into account various factors such as match results, opposition strength, and the importance of each game. Despite the recent minor drop in rankings, Nigeria’s Super Eagles continue to be a prominent force in African football, with high hopes for their performance in future competitions.
