Suspend Tax Reform Bills for Wider Consultation, NNPP Chieftain Urges Tinubu

By Abigail Philip David

The Deputy National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Prince Nwaeze Onu, has urged President Bola Tinubu to suspend the proposed tax reform bills to enable broader consultation with stakeholders nationwide.

In a New Year message released on Friday in Abuja, Onu made the appeal following President Tinubu’s recent nationwide broadcast, where he affirmed his administration’s commitment to the tax reform bills despite growing opposition.

The four proposed bills, currently at the second reading stage in the National Assembly, have faced mounting criticism from various quarters, including the 19 Northern governors and other regional stakeholders. Onu emphasized that such crucial legislation should not be passed without comprehensive input from the public.

“These tax reform bills must be paused, given the fragile state of the economy and the daily struggles of ordinary Nigerians,” Onu stated. “The government must engage stakeholders to ensure that any reforms reflect the interests of all citizens.”

Onu called on the government to reevaluate its policies, arguing that they should inspire hope and positively impact Nigerians’ lives. He also encouraged citizens to remain hopeful, expressing confidence that the nation could overcome its current challenges.

In addition to his critique of the tax reforms, Onu accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of suppressing opposition voices, warning that such actions harm the democratic process.

“A vibrant opposition is crucial for holding the government accountable and ensuring effective policymaking,” he added.

Call for Focus on Education in Ebonyi State

In a related development, Onu appealed to Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru to prioritize sustaining a functional educational system. He urged the governor to build on the foundations established by previous administrations, particularly that of Dr. Sam Egwu.

“There is an urgent need to reduce the cost of governance in Ebonyi State,” Onu said. “With increased federal allocations, funds should be directed towards improving education rather than being spent on luxury vehicles.”

He advised Governor Nwifuru to adopt modern governance strategies that would ensure his policies have a meaningful and lasting impact on the lives of citizens.
