Team Nasarawa Poised for Success as Asaba 2024 National Youth Games Begin

By Leo Zwànke Lafia

Team Nasarawa is set to shine as the 8th edition of the National Youth Games, “Asaba 2024,” kicked off on September 9th at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Delta State. With over 5,000 athletes from across Nigeria’s 36 states participating, Nasarawa State is gearing up to make a significant impact with its strong delegation.

The Director of Sports at the Nasarawa State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development expressed optimism about the team’s performance. He praised the athletes’ rigorous preparation, stating, “Our athletes have trained diligently, and we believe they are ready to excel in their events. We are hopeful for a strong medal haul.”

The Nasarawa team, consisting of 132 members—104 athletes and 33 coaches and officials—arrived in Asaba fully prepared to compete in 15 sports, including hockey, badminton, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling, cycling, table tennis, and lawn tennis.

Boxing coach Nnamdi Osuji expressed confidence in his team, saying, “Our boxers have undergone intensive training. They are both mentally and physically ready, and I am confident they will secure gold medals.”

Hockey coach Zainab Sule also voiced optimism, highlighting the athletes’ discipline and skill development during the Zonal elimination in Jos. “Hockey requires technical prowess, and our players have refined their skills. I anticipate a strong performance from them,” she noted.

During the screening process held on Wednesday, some athletes were disqualified due to age discrepancies, but the team remains focused and determined.

As the games officially began on September 12th and will run until September 19th, 2024, Team Nasarawa is determined to achieve great results and bring home a significant number of medals.
