Tinubu Meets Governors to Tackle Food Crisis Amid Lamentations from Emirs and NBA

President Bola Tinubu is set to convene a crucial meeting with state governors today to address the escalating food crisis and economic challenges gripping the nation. This meeting comes as traditional rulers and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) voice concerns over the worsening hardship caused by the removal of fuel subsidies, leading to soaring transport costs and food inflation.

The gathering with governors, scheduled at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja, aims to explore solutions to the economic downturn before President Tinubu’s departure to Ethiopia for the African Union meeting. Sources close to the Presidency revealed that the discussions will precede the President’s trip, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

The move follows recent comparisons of Nigeria’s economic plight to that of Venezuela by some opposition governors, highlighting issues like hyperinflation and escalating social challenges. However, the Presidency countered these claims, citing the failure of some states to meet basic obligations such as salary payments and pension disbursements.

Meanwhile, protests have erupted across several states, including Niger, Kano, Kogi, and Ondo, as citizens demand immediate action to alleviate the economic strain. Organized labor has also issued a warning, threatening to strike if the government fails to provide necessary assistance by February 23.

Echoing these concerns, the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar III, highlighted the gravity of the situation during a meeting in Kaduna. Emphasizing the twin challenges of poverty and insecurity, the Sultan stressed the need for urgent action to prevent further deterioration.

Similarly, NBA President Yakubu Maikyau called on President Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on insecurity and invest in security measures aligned with global standards. Maikyau underscored the importance of restoring public confidence in the government’s ability to address security threats and revive the economy.

As the nation grapples with these challenges, the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) urged immediate steps to alleviate the economic burden on citizens. CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, called for solidarity and compassion towards the vulnerable, emphasizing the need for leaders to prioritize their welfare.

In response to these pressing issues, Tinubu’s meeting with governors aims to foster collaboration in finding practical solutions to the ongoing crisis. Despite challenges and criticisms, the ruling party remains steadfast in its support for the President’s agenda, reaffirming its commitment to overcoming obstacles and forging ahead.
