Victor Osimhen Alone Insufficient for Chelsea, Says William Gallas

By Daniel Edu

Former Chelsea and Arsenal defender, William Gallas, has expressed skepticism about the potential impact of Victor Osimhen alone at Chelsea, emphasizing that the Nigerian forward cannot single-handedly solve the club’s issues.

Osimhen is reportedly set to depart Napoli next summer, with a release clause estimated between €110 million to €130 million. Chelsea, along with Arsenal and Manchester United, has shown interest in signing the Super Eagles striker, with Chelsea considered the frontrunners due to Osimhen’s past affinity for the club and his admiration for Didier Drogba.

However, Gallas believes that Osimhen’s arrival won’t be transformative for Chelsea unless the squad as a whole is capable of providing the necessary support to the striker. Gallas pointed out that Chelsea’s current lead striker, Nicolas Jackson, needs to score at least 15 goals by the end of the season, and if not, the club should consider acquiring a top-class striker.

“Victor Osimhen to Chelsea? One player won’t make the difference and change things around for Chelsea,” Gallas remarked. “Even if they buy one striker, you have to be sure the players around him have the quality to supply that striker.”

Gallas highlighted the youthfulness of Chelsea’s squad and suggested that improvement might come in the next year, potentially positioning the team to compete for the Premier League. However, he emphasized the need for a top striker if Jackson fails to reach a significant goal tally, stating, “If Jackson cannot reach 15 Premier League goals or more, then Chelsea needs a top striker because at the moment they don’t have it.”
