SWAN Lauds Delta for Hosting 8th Youth Games, Calls for School Sports Revival

From Leo Zwànke, Lafia

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has praised the Delta State Government for its successful organization of the 8th National Youth Games (NYG), held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba. This commendation came during SWAN’s National Convention, chaired by its President, Isaiah Benjamin, and attended by top sports dignitaries from across the country.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the convention, signed by Chimezie Anaso (Chairman), Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji (Secretary), and Abel Leonard (Member), the meeting was held on September 20, 2024, at the VIP Lounge of Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.

SWAN lauded Delta State for its outstanding efforts in mobilizing sports stakeholders and ensuring the smooth execution of the event. “Delta has set an example that other states should follow by involving key personalities from various backgrounds in sports development,” the communiqué read.

The convention also deliberated on a proposal by the Minister of Sports Development to revert the age bracket for the Youth Games from 15 to 17 years. SWAN emphasized the need for a thorough evaluation of this proposal and called for stronger screening measures to curb age cheating in future competitions.

“Proper screening is necessary to uphold the integrity of the Youth Games. We must ensure that age regulations are strictly enforced,” the communiqué stated.

Additionally, the convention advocated for the revival of the school sports system as a fundamental platform for nurturing young talent in Nigeria. “School sports must be revitalized as the foundation for a sustainable youth development program,” it noted.

SWAN further expressed concerns about the inconsistency of equipment used during training and competitions, urging sports federations to maintain uniformity in this regard. The association also called for the establishment of a comprehensive database to track athletes’ performances and enhance transparency in the selection process.

The communiqué addressed the recurring issue of age cheating, calling for the adoption of a scientifically sound and globally accepted screening system by the Ministry of Sports.

SWAN expressed disappointment with states that either did not attend or presented only a few athletes at the Youth Games, urging them to prioritize the event, as it serves as a breeding ground for future talent.

The association also highlighted the challenges faced by veteran athletes, many of whom struggle to meet their needs in retirement. They called on federal and state governments to establish an insurance scheme to cater to these athletes’ medical and financial needs.

“We call on the government to provide better support for our national athletes who often face difficult circumstances in their later years,” SWAN stated.

In its final recommendations, SWAN urged active athletes to pursue education alongside their sports careers to ensure long-term financial security. The convention also reviewed preparations for the upcoming National Sports Festival in Ogun State and expressed optimism that the state is well-equipped to deliver a successful event.
