The Sting of Hunger and Survival in Nigeria of Our Days – Chinedu Obiaku

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Chinedu Nduka Obiaku explores the profound impacts of hunger, greed, and corruption on human behavior in Nigeria. He emphasizes that these existential challenges lead to a disturbing transformation in society, as seen in the actions of various militant groups, including Boko Haram, herdsmen, and IPOB, among others.

Obiaku highlights that many scholars attribute the chaos in Nigeria to the desperate quest for survival. He references his earlier work, “The Man Whose Job Caused Him Losing on Both Sides,” which illustrates how hunger drives behavioral changes among the lower and middle classes in Nigeria. The narrative of Mr. Ebeledike serves as a case study, revealing how individuals are forced to make perilous choices in their struggle for survival.

He describes the IPOB’s fight for self-determination as a reflection of the broader struggle for identity and autonomy among the Igbo people. This situation has created a grim environment where betrayal and violence are rampant, as individuals are recruited into espionage roles, often facing dire consequences.

Obiaku further elaborates on the frustrations faced by the IPOB in their quest for a referendum, highlighting the significant risks involved. The military’s operations, such as Operation Python Dance, have led to tragic losses among the youth in the region.

The case of Mr. Ebeledike, who became embroiled in this dangerous game of dual allegiance, illustrates the peril of navigating between opposing forces. His situation raises questions about loyalty and identity among the Igbo people and the tragic outcomes of such internal conflicts.

As Obiaku questions the broader implications of betrayal within the community, he poignantly reflects on the plight of Mr. Ebeledike and his family. The story serves as a cautionary tale about the high stakes involved in the struggle for survival in a deeply divided society.
