More than 90 retired journalists in were celebrated for their lifelong contributions to the profession during a colourful ceremony at the in Yenagoa.
The event, organised by correspondent Ovieteme George and supported by , honoured veterans from radio, television, print, and photojournalism with cash awards, plaques, and a novelty football match that kicked off the festivities.
Managing Director of Tantita Security Services, High Chief Kestin Pondi, represented by Administrative Manager Daisy Jaja, commended journalists for amplifying the voices of the voiceless and contributing to societal development. He praised George’s initiative of celebrating media veterans while they are alive rather than waiting for posthumous tributes and encouraged younger journalists to uphold professionalism.
Apostle David Wale Feso of Charismatic Renaissance International Church described the event as timely, stressing the importance of recognising service during one’s lifetime. He lauded the convener and sponsors for what he termed a thoughtful gesture.
Chairman of the (NUJ), Bayelsa State Council, Comrade Tonye Yemoleigha, reaffirmed the union’s commitment to celebrating excellence in journalism. He described the programme as a wake-up call for media practitioners to value their contributions to humanity and urged governments, individuals, and organisations to support the media.
Convener Ovieteme George said the initiative was designed to honour veteran journalists while they could still appreciate the recognition. He expressed gratitude for the support received and urged colleagues to remain committed to truth and societal progress. He also acknowledged key supporters, including High Chief Kestin Pondi and Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo).
Some of the awardees, including Mrs. Timiebi Sam-Ebiye, Mr. Eddie Emessiri, and retired Director of Information Mr. Chris Odi, expressed appreciation for the recognition. They called on state and federal authorities to replicate similar initiatives across the country.
Highlights of the event included friendly football matches, presentation of plaques, and the distribution of ₦1,000,000 dummy cheques to each of the over 90 honourees. An additional ₦5,000,000 was presented to five octogenarians among them.
The celebration reinforced growing calls for greater recognition and support for veteran media professionals while they remain active witnesses to their legacy.
