Relief for Former Councillors in Abia as Payment of Arrears Begins

By Okechukwu Keshi Ukegbu

Former councillors who served in local government councils across between 1999 and 2023 are set to receive long-awaited economic relief as the payment of their outstanding arrears and entitlements commences.

Governor gave the assurance during a meeting with members of the Association of Elected Former Councillors in the state, stating that arrangements had been concluded to begin payments in batches before the end of the month.

According to the governor, the process has been finalised to ensure a smooth disbursement of the funds owed by previous administrations.

“I’m told that everything should be set by the end of this month. So what that means is that by the end of this month, we will start the payment in batches,” Otti said.

He stressed that the decision was not politically motivated, maintaining that fairness and equity would guide the exercise.

“The reason why we are doing this is not politics. Our political party is there. But quite frankly, whether you are a member of my party or you are not, you will be treated fairly and equally,” he added.

While appreciating the group for acknowledging his administration’s efforts and endorsing him for a second term, the governor explained that settling the arrears was simply the right thing to do.

He reiterated that his administration remains committed to doing what is right at all times, regardless of pressure or political considerations.
