Umahi Inspects Lekki Port Access Road, Directs Accelerated Work

The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has carried out an on-site inspection of the Lagos 7th Axial Road, also known as the Lekki Port Access Road, reaffirming the Federal Government’s resolve to deliver the strategic infrastructure within schedule.

The inspection saw the Minister review ongoing construction works alongside senior officials and technical teams from China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), the contractor handling the project.

The Lagos 7th Axial Road is regarded as a key logistics corridor designed to support maritime and industrial operations, particularly around the Lekki axis. During the tour, Umahi examined various construction segments, evaluating engineering methods and structural frameworks being implemented across the site.

Addressing journalists after the inspection, the Minister expressed satisfaction with the pace and progress of work, noting visible improvements in site organisation and expansion of active construction fronts.

He commended the standard of construction and quality control measures observed, describing them as consistent with expectations for a project of national importance. He urged the contractor to sustain and even increase the current tempo to ensure timely delivery.

Umahi directed the project team to intensify equipment deployment and maintain strict adherence to construction quality benchmarks across all sections of the road.

On the technically sensitive Lagoon Section (Lot 1), the Minister provided clarity on the final design approach. He announced that the original bridge design would be retained, following joint geotechnical investigations and soil analysis conducted by the Federal Ministry of Works, independent consultants and CHEC engineers. The decision, the minister explained, followed extensive technical and cost evaluations of alternative proposals.

The Lagos 7th Axial Road is expected to play a transformative role upon completion. The highway is projected to ease cargo evacuation, reduce logistics costs and strengthen Nigeria’s trade competitiveness because of its primary access route to the Lekki Deep Sea Port and adjoining Free Trade Zones.

For residents and businesses along the Lekki-Epe corridor, the project promises to alleviate persistent traffic congestion, improve mobility and enhance economic activity in the area.

Beyond easing transportation challenges, officials say the road will stimulate industrial growth, attract foreign direct investment and generate employment opportunities, further consolidating Lagos’ position as a leading commercial centre in Africa.

Umahi reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing any operational or external challenges that may arise, assuring stakeholders that necessary support would be provided to ensure the successful and timely completion of the project.
