Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Ijaw nation in Delta State has endorsed President and Governor for a second term in office.
The endorsement, delivered at a grand reception in , signals a major shift in the political dynamics of the oil-rich Niger Delta.
Organised by the , the event attracted political leaders, traditional rulers and grassroots stakeholders in what observers described as a rare show of unity across the region.
The endorsement was formalised through a motion moved by federal lawmaker and seconded by state legislator . The motion, presided over by Speaker , was adopted through a voice vote without opposition.
At the event, the Delta Ijaw Traditional Rulers Forum conferred on Governor Oborevwori the traditional title “Izonebimiewei,” meaning “the man that does good,” in recognition of what leaders described as his administration’s development efforts in riverine communities.
Responding, Oborevwori disclosed that over ₦400 billion has been invested in infrastructure across Ijaw areas, including roads, bridges, schools and healthcare facilities. He listed key projects such as the Bomadi–Gbaregolor Road, Ohoror–Bomadi Road and the Ayakoromo Bridge as part of efforts to address long-standing neglect and improve connectivity.
“I remain grateful for the unwavering support of the Ijaw people,” the governor said, assuring that the endorsement would not be taken for granted.
Also speaking, Bayelsa State Governor, , challenged narratives that geography should justify underdevelopment in the Niger Delta, calling for greater unity among the Ijaw people.
President of the INC, , described the gathering as both an endorsement and a platform to demand increased investment in critical sectors such as healthcare, education and infrastructure.
The event is seen as a strategic political signal that the Ijaw nation is positioning itself with a unified voice ahead of the 2027 elections.
