Nigerian Stars Shine Across Europe: Osimhen, Olayinka and Ibrahim Lead the Charge

Nigerian footballers delivered standout performances across Europe over the weekend, with Victor Osimhen stealing the spotlight after a decisive return from injury in Turkey.

In Istanbul, Osimhen made an immediate impact as Galatasaray cruised to a commanding 3-0 victory over fierce rivals Fenerbahçe, strengthening their hold on the Turkish Super Lig title race. The striker opened the scoring just before half-time, reacting quickly to force the ball home with his knee. Goals from Barış Alper Yılmaz and Lucas Torreira sealed the derby triumph. Osimhen now has 13 goals and four assists in 20 league appearances, with Galatasaray sitting seven points clear with three matches remaining.

In England, Frank Onyeka capped an impressive spell with Coventry City by providing an assist in their 3-1 win over Wrexham AFC, as the Sky Blues celebrated their Championship title at home. Onyeka, who was booked in the first half, set up Ephron Mason-Clark’s stoppage-time goal to complete the victory.

Meanwhile, Arthur Okonkwo remained an unused substitute for Wrexham, whose play-off hopes hang in the balance heading into the final day of the season.

In women’s football, Rofiat Imuran made her long-awaited return from injury, featuring briefly in London City Lionesses’s emphatic 5-1 win over Leicester City Women—her first appearance after a 10-match absence.

Over in France, Moses Simon returned from injury and played 69 minutes, but Paris FC suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Lille OSC, ending their nine-game unbeaten run. Chidozie Awaziem did not feature as FC Nantes fell 2-1 to Stade Rennais, leaving them in deep relegation trouble.

In Germany, Victor Boniface returned to action for Bayer Leverkusen after knee surgery, making the bench in a 1-1 draw with VfB Stuttgart, while Felix Agu missed a second consecutive game through injury.

Spain offered little relief for Sevilla FC, who slumped to a 2-1 defeat against CA Osasuna. Akor Adams played only a few minutes despite being the club’s top scorer, while Chidera Ejuke remained on the bench. The loss leaves Sevilla stuck in the relegation zone.

There was better news in Belgium, where Raphael Onyedika returned from injury to help Club Brugge secure a 2-0 win over KAA Gent, boosting their title hopes.

In Scotland, Emmanuel Fernandez played the full 90 minutes, but Rangers FC suffered a 3-2 defeat to Motherwell FC, denting their title ambitions.

Cyprus also produced headlines, with Peter Olayinka scoring in APOEL FC’s thrilling 3-3 draw against Pafos FC, making it goals in consecutive matches. Francis Uzoho remains sidelined with injury.

In Portugal, Terem Moffi featured for 30 minutes in FC Porto’s 2-1 victory over Estrela da Amadora but was unable to add to his goal tally, while Zaidu Sanusi continues his recovery.

In Latvia, Hussein Ibrahim maintained his impressive scoring form, netting his fourth goal in eight matches to secure FK Auda’s 2-1 win over FK Tukums 2000. Despite a response from Ede Oloko, who scored his fifth in seven games, Tukums fell short.

Overall, it was another weekend of strong performances and key contributions from Nigerian players making their mark across European football.
