Gusau reaffirms commitment to athletics development

Ibrahim Gusau, Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Leader, has reaffirmed commitment to the development of Nigerian athletics to ensure international standards.

Gusau gave the assurance in a statement signed by AFN Director-General, Siminialayi Young- Pepple, on Thursday in Lagos.

Gusau said that the federation would work hard to produce  athletes that would win medals at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

He promised that the welfare of athletes and coaches would be top priorities.

“We are not going to make up the numbers at this year’s Olympics; we have set targets for the federation,  and we are working to ensure that we win, at least, two gold medals in Japan,” he said.

“We are starting the 2020 calendar season with an all-comers open competition at  Ozoro in Delta, which is aimed at selecting the best home-based talents.

” The best talents would represent the country at the upcoming Confederation of African Athletics Region II Athletics Championships in Kaduna, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games,” he said.

Gusau, who is also the Vice President of the Confederation of Africa Athletics  hailed athletics stakeholders, especially the media, for  support for the federation.

He assured the stakeholders that he would do his best to lift athletics.

He described his mandate as that  for reform and  investment in the future of athletics in Nigeria.

” The mandate is from the congress and other stakeholders to return the glorious days of athletics in Nigeria,” he said.(NAN)
