Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State is making remarkable strides in transforming the state’s sports sector, using it as a tool for youth engagement, economic growth, and social cohesion.
Transforming Infrastructure
In November 2024, Governor Sule unveiled plans to upgrade Lafia City Stadium into a world-class sports facility. The proposed renovations include increased seating capacity, modernized athlete amenities, and state-of-the-art equipment. These upgrades aim to position the stadium as one of Nigeria’s premier sports destinations.
Grassroots Development
In August 2024, the governor launched the Governor’s Cup, a statewide football competition that spans Nasarawa’s 13 local government areas. This initiative provides young athletes with a platform to showcase their talent while fostering unity and healthy competition among communities.
Encouraging Private Sector Involvement
During the second edition of the Shuaibu D. Mohammed North Central Table Tennis Tournament in December 2024, Governor Sule emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships. Former Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Amb. Isaac Yargwa, noted that the administration’s collaboration with private stakeholders has played a pivotal role in grassroots sports development.
Support for Women’s Sports
Governor Sule’s administration has been a strong advocate for gender equality in sports. In December 2024, he awarded the Nasarawa Amazons, the state’s female football team, a N20 million cash prize for their outstanding performance, demonstrating his commitment to encouraging female participation in sports.
Rewarding Excellence
To inspire athletes, the governor fulfilled a promise to distribute N10 million to 65 medal-winning athletes who represented the state in various competitions. This act of recognition not only rewards excellence but also motivates others to strive for success.
National Exposure and Talent Development
Eche Amos, Media Director of Nasarawa United FC, highlighted the state’s rising reputation as a football talent hub. Players from Nasarawa United have been invited to national teams, including Victor Collins, who was on the Super Eagles’ bench during the Nations Cup qualifiers.
Economic and Social Benefits
Governor Sule recognizes the economic potential of sports. By hosting regional and national tournaments, his administration aims to attract sports tourism, boost local businesses, and create employment opportunities.
Holistic Approach to Athlete Welfare
Governor Sule’s administration has introduced health and insurance schemes for athletes, ensuring their well-being and providing them with the support needed to focus on their careers. Sports scholarships and development programs in collaboration with educational institutions further balance academic and athletic pursuits for young talents.
National Recognition
The National President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Benjamin Alegbe, commended Governor Sule’s comprehensive approach to sports development. Nasarawa State is increasingly seen as a model for leveraging sports as a tool for development and youth empowerment.
A Lasting Legacy
Governor Sule’s multifaceted approach to sports—spanning infrastructure, grassroots initiatives, athlete welfare, and private sector engagement—has laid the foundation for sustainable growth in Nasarawa State’s sports sector. His vision not only addresses immediate goals but also ensures a lasting impact, benefiting future generations of athletes and sports enthusiasts.
