By Joyce Remi-Babayeju

The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has been honoured with the Excellence in Emergency Response and Humanitarian Services Award at the National Excellence Award in Public Service (NEAPS).

The award was presented on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Office of the Vice President, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia. Mrs. Zubaida Umar was among other distinguished awardees, including the governors of Bauchi, Zamfara, Kano, Adamawa states, as well as the honorable ministers of aviation and women’s affairs, among others.

Speaking at the ceremony, the president, who was represented by the secretary to the Government of the federation, Senator George Akume, congratulated the awardees and encouraged them to sustain the high standards of performance that earned them the national recognition.

The founder of the annual award, Hajiya Mariam Mohammed, stated that the recipients were rigorously selected based on their exemplary records of excellence, leadership, and commitment to delivering quality public service.

Organized in collaboration with the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation by The Best Strategic Media (TBS), the NEAPS Award took place on Sunday, 7th December, 2025, at the State House Conference Centre, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Reacting to the honour, Mrs. Zubaida Umar expressed profound appreciation to the president and the organizers. She described the award as a motivation to further strengthen national emergency preparedness, humanitarian services, and public safety across the country.

The recognition is a testimony to the outstanding performance and transformative leadership of the Director General NEMA in repositioning disaster management in Nigeria under the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government.

Notably, under Zubaida’s leadership, NEMA has strengthened early warning, preparedness, and response mechanisms; deepened stakeholder collaboration; and enhanced national resilience to emergencies.
