The Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, Mallam Modibbo Kawu has revealed why the popular television reality programme Big Brother Africa is currently being produced the country as against previous practiced when the producers made South Africa their choice location.
Moddibo Kawu while speaking in Abuja today in an interactive session said that the new preference was the result of the painstaking efforts of the Commission which now makes it illegal for programmes designed for the local Nigerian audience to be produced outside the country.
According to the DG, the NBC now has a new code which is binding on all broadcasting houses both public and private.
“so it has become illegal to produce programmes design for the local Nigerian audience to be produced outside the country. In the past there was nothing we could do but now armed with this new code, we can take action because the code is binding on all broadcasters and our duty as enforcers of the code is to ensure that everyone complies.
He noted that this was a major break through as the multiplier effect was good for the economy.
Giving insights into its regulatory function he said that the Commission was having a difficult time performing its regulatory role as many media owners often use their media to fight the Commission even when they know they are doing the wrong thing. He also noted that the Commission was being owed over N4 billion in unpaid lisence fees.
