NLC Pledges Support for Nigerian Nurses Amid Economic Hardship

By   Milcah  Tanimu

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) president, Joe Ajaero, has reiterated the union’s commitment to stand with Nigerian nurses during challenging economic times. Speaking at the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) eighth Quadrennial Delegates’ Conference in Abuja, Ajaero praised nurses for their resilience, recognizing their essential role in maintaining the NLC’s strength and vibrancy.

The conference, themed “Delivering Quality Healthcare in the Face of Economic Hardship: The Roles and Responsibilities of Nurses,” explored the ongoing challenges within healthcare and labor sectors. Former NLC president Ayuba Wabba emphasized the diverse roles of nurses, calling for more hires to meet the World Health Organisation’s one-nurse-to-five-patients standard.

NANNM’s national president, Michael Nnachi, also addressed the impact of negative perceptions on the association, underlining the need to prioritize member welfare and advocate for better work conditions for nurses and midwives. The event will also see the election of a new NANNM national executive, set to serve a three-year term.
